COMPANY

Brera Cerniere has been designing and manufacturing hinges for household appliances since 1956.

Extensive experience in the industry combined with constant efforts in Research & Development plus a large number of patents on its products have enabled the company to support the world's most important groups in the production of household appliances.

THE NEED

The household appliance market increasingly demands that the locks on domestic ovens, washing machines and dishwashers be checked, frictioned and gently closed. Brera Cerniere has taken up this challenge, proposing a patented mechanism known as a damper, which balances the reset and actuation forces of the locking mechanisms.

The modulation of the damper's braking effect relies not only on the correct design of the component but also on the precision of the viscosity of the lubricating fluid contained within.

The need for a high stability of the damper's braking effect at varying temperatures together with the strict tolerance in batch repeatability was a central point in the formulation of the most suitable synthetic lubricating oil.

HOW WE INTERVENED

In order to formulate the best solution, we started with the choice of the chemical composition of the base fluid: silicone oil (characterised by high consistency of viscosity under varying temperatures).

The complexity of the project, linked to Brera Cerniere's need to provide an array of control intensities for the locking mechanism, made it necessary to produce numerous viscosity grades with standards not available on the market. Controls were performed with a precision rotational rheometer model Anton Paar MCR 102 under controlled temperature.

THE RESULTS

Tests conducted by the company and confirmations from their customers have enabled specific viscous gradations with high precision to be to isolated. The production methodology of silicone oils for dampers makes it possible to:

  • Reduce the nominal viscosity variation tolerance by 50 per cent compared to silicone oils on the market;
  • Contain friction effect tolerances with a temperature range of +15° t +150° C;
  • Ensure infinite availability of dynamic viscosity values.
